1. Riolu

A young boy named Ash Ketchum walked through Viridian Forest, Pikachu perched comfortably on his shoulder. They had just returned from Unova, and the familiar sights of the forest seemed to welcome them back.

" Buddy, it’s been a while since we last saw Mom ", Ash said, glancing down at his trusted partner.

" Pika ", Pikachu replied affirmatively.

" You know ", Ash continued, his voice tinged with melancholy, " after traveling through so many regions, we finally get to see Mom again. But…it’s been years since I last saw my Dad ".

" Pika pika pi pika chu ", Pikachu said gently, tilting its head. {It’s the first time I’ve heard you talk about your Dad.}

Ash sighed, staring at the forest floor. " I was six when Dad left on his journey. I haven’t seen him since. I miss him, but… "

Before he could finish, a voice—belonging to a Pokémon—interrupted him.

Both Ash and Pikachu exchanged a quick glance, and without hesitation, they ran toward the source of the voice.

When they arrived, they saw a Riolu desperately trying to escape a flock of Spearow, led by a menacing Fearow. Ash’s eyes narrowed; he couldn’t stand by while a Pokémon was in pain. Determined, he stepped forward.

" Pikachu, use Thunderbolt on that Fearow! " Ash commanded, his voice firm.

At the sound of Ash’s voice, Fearow tilted his head toward the direction of the command. His eyes widened in recognition, and a flash of anger ignited within them. It was the same trainer who had thrown a rock at him before.

Meanwhile, Pikachu launched a Thunderbolt at Fearow. It struck directly, and the attack was super effective. Fearow let out a piercing cry of rage, and the Spearow chasing Riolu immediately halted, turning their attention toward Ash to launch an attack.

Seeing the danger, Ash quickly ordered, " Pikachu, Thunderbolt, again! "

But with so many Spearow surrounding them, Pikachu’s attack couldn’t reach them all. As one Spearow swooped in, ready to strike with Fury Attack, a sudden Aura Sphere slammed into it, knocking it down. Ash turned toward the source and saw a tired Riolu struggling to stay on its feet, determination shining in its eyes.

Ash realized they were heavily outnumbered and considered calling in all of his Pokémon—but before he could act, a sharp cry echoed through the forest, startling the flock of Spearow and Fearow.

Suddenly, a massive Twister struck Fearow, and gusts of wind swept through the attacking Spearow. Ash looked up in awe: a flock of Pidgey, Pidgeotto, and Pidgeot had arrived, attacking Fearow and its minions. Among them, a large Pidgeot dove at Fearow, and the two powerful Pokémon clashed midair in a fierce battle.

Ash commanded Pikachu to keep attacking the Spearow with Thunderbolt while he rushed to Riolu, who had fainted after being struck by one of the attackers. Gently picking up Riolu, Ash returned to Pikachu’s side, cradling the small Pokémon in his arms.

The battle had been raging for twenty minutes, and it seemed that the line of Pidgey was gaining the upper hand. Ash shifted his attention to the intense duel between Pidgeot and Fearow. Fearow launched a powerful Drill Peck, but Pidgeot countered with a precise Peck. Fearow then soared into a Sky Attack, only to be met with a Brave Bird from Pidgeot.

The two were locked in a stalemate. Then, as if reading Ash’s thoughts, Pidgeot seemed to get an idea. Using Double Team, it created multiple illusions, confusing Fearow. Seizing the opportunity, Pidgeot unleashed a full-power Steel Wing that struck Fearow directly. Without missing a beat, Pidgeot followed up with Twister, knocking Fearow out of the sky.

Seeing their leader defeated, all the Spearow scattered and fled. Ash let out a relieved sigh and turned to Pidgeot.

“Hey, Pidgeot, thanks for helping us,” Ash said with a warm smile, his eyes reflecting gratitude.

At the sound of the familiar voice, Pidgeot’s eyes filled with tears. Recognizing the person standing before him, he didn’t hesitate—he swooped down and embraced Ash, startling him for a moment. As they held each other, an idea suddenly struck Ash’s mind.

" Pidgeot… is that really you? " Ash asked, hope shining in his eyes.

Pidgeot nodded eagerly, pressing closer in another heartfelt hug. Ash hugged him back without hesitation, a mix of relief and happiness flooding through him.

After a few moments, they gently pulled apart. Ash looked into Pidgeot’s eyes, tears welling up in his own.

“I’m sorry, Pidgeot,” Ash said, his voice heavy with guilt. “I forgot my promise and never came back to take you with me after my adventures on the Orange Islands.”

Pidgeot shook his head gently, as if to say, Don’t worry—I forgive you.

Suddenly, Pidgeot turned and pointed toward one of Ash’s Poké Balls, catching Ash’s attention.

" Wait… are you saying that you still want to come back with me? " Ash asked, surprised and a little overwhelmed by the flying Pokémon’s response.

" Pidgaw ", Pidgeot replied softly, a clear affirmation of its wish to return.

" But Pidgeot, what about your flock? " Ash asked sincerely, concern etched on his face. " That Fearow could attack them again. I don’t want them to be left unprotected ".

" Pidgaw, Pidgaw ", Pidgeot replied, glancing at his flock with a calm confidence. {Don’t worry—they can protect themselves.}

" Are you saying they’re capable of taking care of themselves now? That since many Pidgeotto have evolved into Pidgeot, there’s no need to worry? " Ash asked, relief slowly washing over him.

Pidgeot nodded, affirming Ash’s words. Then, he turned to his flock and bid them farewell. The group of Pidgey, Pidgeotto, and Pidgeot chirped and flapped around him, happy that their leader had been reunited with his trainer. Though there was sadness in saying goodbye, they understood that their leader’s place was now with Ash.

" Pidgeot, I currently have six Pokémon with me ", Ash said, glancing down at the unconscious Riolu he had gently laid on the ground after Fearow and his flock had retreated. Pikachu, standing beside Riolu, was breathing heavily. " Mind giving me a lift to Professor Oak’s lab like old times? Riolu’s injured, and Pikachu’s exhausted ".

Pidgeot immediately understood what Ash meant. With a confident nod, he agreed to carry them to the lab. Ash carefully picked up Riolu and settled onto Pidgeot’s back, while Pikachu, after giving a cheerful greeting to Pidgeot, hopped onto his trainer’s shoulder.

With a powerful beat of his wings, Pidgeot took flight, soaring toward Professor Oak’s lab as the sun began to dip below the horizon. After a few minutes, they arrived safely at the lab. Ash thanked Pidgeot warmly for the ride before running inside, eager to get help for Riolu and Pikachu.

" Professor, please open the door! It’s an emergency! " Ash shouted, ringing the doorbell frantically.

Hearing Ash’s voice, Professor Oak hurried to the door and swung it open, immediately noticing the injured Riolu cradled in Ash’s arms.

" Ash, my boy! What happened? " Professor Oak asked, his voice filled with concern.

" Professor, it’s a long story—I’ll explain everything later ", Ash replied, his eyes shifting between Riolu and Pikachu. " Right now, we need to treat Riolu. Pikachu also needs to recover; he’s exhausted from the battle ".

Sensing the urgency, Professor Oak nodded and gently took the unconscious Riolu from Ash’s arms. He carefully examined and treated him, while also giving a Lum Berry to Pikachu to help him recover. After about half an hour, Oak smiled and said, " Riolu is going to be fine. With some rest, he’ll be back to full strength in no time ".

Ash breathed a sigh of relief and thanked the Professor, cradling Riolu in his arms once again. Pikachu happily jumped onto his shoulder, chirping softly.

With his Pokémon safe and recovering, Ash made his way to Professor Oak’s ranch. There, he released his Unova Pokémon, telling them to take a long, well-deserved rest. Although his Unova team seemed curious at seeing a Riolu in their trainer’s arms, they trusted Ash and didn’t ask any questions.

Afterward, Ash retrieved Pidgeot’s old Poké Ball and went to his loyal companion. With a smile, he called Pidgeot back into the Poké Ball before heading home. On the way, he made sure to recount all the day’s events to Professor Oak, explaining everything that had happened in Viridian Forest.

When Ash finally reached his house, he burst through the door, his voice ringing with excitement.

" Mom! I’m home! " he shouted, unable to contain his joy at finally seeing her again.
